US Releases $200bn List Of Chinese Products For Possible New Tariffs

Beijing warns of "necessary countermeasures" as Washington announces 10 percent tariffs on Chinese goods, upping the ante in its trade dispute with the Asian economic giant.

Trump has recently introduced tariffs on $34 billion worth of Chinese products and, while hundreds of products have been affected, certain goods were conveniently spared from this enactment - including the products made for Ivanka's internationally manufactured fashion brand.

The U.S. Trade Representative announced Tuesday a possible second round of tariff hikes targeting a $200 billion United States list of Chinese goods ranging from burglar alarms to mackerel. He said: "As in the past, the United States is willing to engage in efforts that could lead to a resolution of our concerns about China's unfair trade practices and to China opening its market to USA goods and services".

More than 6,031 product lines are affected by the proposed tariffs, including seafood, fruits and vegetables, grains, tobacco, auto rearview mirrors and burglar alarms.

There is a two-month period of public comment on the latest proposed list before the tariffs get imposed.

TRT World's Kevin McAleese reports from Washington DC.

The list amounts to $200 billion in products in total and also includes chemicals, steel, aluminum, TV components and many consumer products, including food and clothing.

But Trump has said continuously that China has taken advantage of the US economy, and he has vowed to hit almost all the country's products with tariffs, as much as $450 billion. China quickly responded by imposing tariffs on $34 billion in USA products.

"The Chinese side is shocked by the actions of the United States", it said in a statement, according to a translation by Google.

Beijing has vowed to "fight back as usual" after Donald Trump's tit-for-tat trade war with China escalated once again last night.

However, in a statement this morning the Chinese ministry of commerce hit back, saying: "China is shocked by U.S. behaviour".

A Commerce Ministry statement said, "It is totally unacceptable for American side to publish a tariff list in a way that is accelerating and escalating". "This irrational behavior is unpopular".

The U.S. president has said he may ultimately impose tariffs on more than $500 billion worth of Chinese goods, roughly the total amount of U.S. imports from China past year.

USA officials on Tuesday issued a list of thousands of Chinese goods to be hit with the new tariffs.

Pence cited several exporting opportunities that he said have improved during the Trump administration, including beef to China and poultry to South Korea.

Senate Finance Committee chairman Orrin Hatch, a Republican, said the move "appears reckless and is not a targeted approach".

The US Chamber of Commerce, which had supported Mr Trump's domestic tax cuts, was less enamoured of his tariff policies.

"Tariffs on such a broad scope of products make it inconceivable that American consumers will dodge this tax increase as prices of everyday products will be forced to rise", David French, the group's senior vice president for government relations, said in a statement.

The President's tariffs are already squeezing some US firms, which have started to raise prices or lay off workers as a result.
