Giuliani: Kim Jong-un 'begged' for summit to take place

Singapore authorities on Tuesday marked out a part of the island surrounding the Capella hotel as a special security zone for the days around the summit.

Sung Kim, who has been leading a USA delegation to pre-summit negotiations with North Korea on the inter-Korean border, Nauert said.

For his part, Kim reportedly wants to stay at the Fullerton Hotel, which has a more than $6,000 per night presidential suite, and not pay for it, leaving American officials to figure out how to waive sanctions prohibiting the USA from covering the costs, or see if Singapore can pick up the tab.

The off-again-on-again meeting between Trump and Kim was originally announced earlier this spring and more officially put on the schedule last month for June 12 in Singapore.

Trump has credited his "maximum pressure" policy with bringing North Korea to the negotiating table.

He said the president had been left with no choice but to cancel after Mr Kim insulted the vice president Mike Pence and threatened nuclear war.

"And I've always asked [Kim] to talk to me because he wants the people of North Korea - and the government over there asked me to talk to Donald Trump about what they want and how we can solve things".

"And the President will make his views known directly to him when we're in Singapore, and our focus will continue to be on denuclearisation", Sanders said.

"We're not paying for their expenses", she said, adding that the USA has not asked other countries to "pay for this".

The minister, who will be accompanied by foreign ministry officials, will also meet the North's ceremonial president Kim Yong Nam.

"We will not pull back that pressure campaign" until North Korea "follows through on its pledge to denuclearise", she said, adding "that is something we have been consistent upon in this administration".
