Canada to impose similar tariffs on United States steel and aluminum products

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (seen here with President Trump in October) on Thursday called the argument that USA steel import tariffs were necessary for national security reasons an "affront" to Canada.

Canada, the largest supplier of steel to the United States, will impose tariffs covering C$16.6 billion ($12.8 billion) on imports from the United States, including whiskey, orange juice, steel, aluminum and other products, Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said.

Trump imposed the tariffs in March after his U.S. Commerce Department declared that steel and aluminum imports undermine the country's manufacturing base and threaten national security.

Canada, Mexico and Europe had been exempted until June 1 from import duties of 25 per cent on steel and 10 per cent on aluminum when they were first imposed in March.

The EU had "no choice" but to bring a case before the World Trade Organization and impose duties on U.S. imports, he added.

Outside the beer industry, multiple studies estimated that the steel and aluminum tariffs would result in a net loss of U.S. jobs and hurt the domestic economy.

The director of UK Steel, Gareth Stace, said he feared there was clear potential for a damaging trade war.

The United States' launch of a tariff probe into vehicle imports last week was also seen as a move created to pressure its NAFTA partners in negotiations that have been contentious on issues including rules of origin and wages as they apply to the automotive sector.

The White House has sought to include a "sunset" provision in the NAFTA renegotiation for months, but Canada and Mexico have always been cool to the idea, saying it would remove any economic security and certainty for businesses trying to comply with trade rules.

"I don't think it helps the NAFTA negotiations", Lester said.

The boy's mother was not in Paris at the time as she was with family members in France's Réunion Island, in the Indian Ocean. I crossed the street to save him", Gassama said, the AP said. "I just climbed up and thank God, God helped me".

"We will now trigger a dispute settlement case at the WTO, since these United States measures clearly go against agreed global rules".

"So I answered that, unfortunately, if that was a precondition to our visit, I was unable to accept - and so we did not go to Washington for that day of negotiations".

Still, the decision to scrap Trudeau's proposed trip to Washington signaled the latest hiccup in months of intense negotiations to rework NAFTA - a deal from which Trump has repeatedly threatened to withdraw.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said Thursday that the U.S.

International Trade Secretary Liam Fox told Sky News: "It's very disappointing that the United States has chosen to apply steel and aluminium tariffs to countries across the European Union, allies of the United States, and all in the name of national security".

Mexico responded it would levy penalties on a list of us goods, and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said the EU would do the same.

Mr Trump has the authority to lift the tariffs or alter them at any time, he added.

Mexico will target the USA agricultural sector for tariffs. Going forward, he added, he hopes the two countries can find common ground so to mutually benefit their economies and their people.

"The UK Government must support EU safeguards to protect our industry and ensure more dumped steel does not end up on European shores".

European Union countries have given broad support to the Commission's plan to set duties on 2.8 billion euros ($3.3 billion) of US exports, including whiskey and motorbikes, if Washington ends the European Union tariff exemption.
