Facebook introduces cloud storage, voice posts, and Stories Archive

There are three new Facebook features coming to India first, then the rest of the world. With this, people will now be able to save the photos and videos they capture through the Facebook camera, where only they can see them when they log into their Facebook account. Currently, it is possible to save photos and videos taken on the Camera to a phone's camera roll, but not to a Facebook account. While users will be able to share 20 seconds long voice posts in Facebook Stories, no such limit has been set on voice posts shared in the News Feed.

But free (and apparently unlimited) photo storage and automatic archiving bridge the gap between ephemeral sharing and Facebook's more typical posts. "For a lot of people, audio is a very important way for them to express themselves and communicate", said Hayes.

The third and last feature that Facebook will add is the ability to archive and view older Stories. This new feature will be present as a new mode in the Facebook Camera. Not only does it virtually eliminate the ephemerality that has characterized Stories up to this point, but it incorporates it more closely with Facebook's existing uses. He was referring to Alexa, Google Home, and other smart home speakers, but it seems Facebook heard him as well, as the platform is gearing up to introduce voice posts for Stories. "We have no news to announce at this time", the company said. The pitch, to both publishers and brands, is that its software allows them to create a significant amount of video content with minimal investment of time and money.

Nearly as an afterthought, Facebook is also adding voice posts, which allows the camera-shy to make fun updates without having to put on makeup first.

The next new feature is that images captured using the Facebook camera can now automatically be uploaded to the Facebook cloud. "You can still find it in your Stories Archive if you have Archive turned on", explains Hayes. Specifically, it's adding an archive for Stories posts, so you can save the ones you like to a permanent gallery.

Facebook is rolling out updates to its Stories feature. Users will get an option whether they want to archive Stories. You can also reshare them as a story or post it on News Feed.

It is worth noting here that stories will be archived once they disappear from the Stories section after the standard 24-hour window passes. These will be rolled out for India first.

Administration officials consider the release an encouraging signal ahead of next month's summit. We'll hold them to those steps.
