North Korea To Dismantle Its Nuclear Test Site

North Korea announces it will host a ceremony for the official dismantling of its nuclear test site, marking another foreign policy victory for the Trump administration.

North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs pledged transparency and laid out plans Saturday to dismantle the country's nuclear testing site.

"They would have to invite the International Atomic Energy Agency, trained inspectors to verify what was taking place, in order for us to have real confidence that that site was closed".

"In due consideration of small space of the test ground, journalists from other countries will be confined to those from China, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom and South Korea", said the statement.

Explosives will start the demolition by collapsing under-ground tunnels, the statement said, before removing observations areas, research institutes and guard-units. The site has already been in doubt amid signs of structural weakness, and some observers have said it would be unsafe to do more tests there.

The dismantling of the test site is the latest in a series of major concessions by Pyongyang ahead of the summit with Trump. The North has been vowing to pursue nuclear development unless Washington removes its 28,500 troops from South Korea and the nuclear umbrella defending South Korea and Japan.

All global journalists would be provided with a charter flight into Wonsan, a port city in eastern North Korea, from Beijing, KCNA said.

Pyongyang has invited foreign journalists, including those from the U.S., to cover the event. Prior to that, Kim agreed to discuss complete denuclearization and suspend nuclear and ballistic missile tests in order to meet Trump. Two of the North Korean missiles passed over the Japanese island of Hokkaido.

Early on May 10, Pompeo returned to the United States from a second trip to Pyongyang together with three American prisoners released from North Korea.

"We had good conversations, substantive conversations that involved deep complex challenges", Pompeo said Friday about his two meetings with Kim, who is known for assassinating rivals and family members, and running prison camps throughout his country.

Six nuclear tests have been carried out there since 2006.

However, he said the other crucial steps North Korea needed to take to demilitarize its nuclear program were to shut its plutonium production reactor, and open its uranium processing to inspection.

The newspaper said the Punggye-ri site, situated near Mount Mantap in northeastern North Korea, was "wrecked" beyond fix by a landslide.

On Thursday, Trump tweeted that the "extremely anticipated assembly" between himself and Kim, scheduled for June 12 in Singapore, represents a probably "very particular second for World Peace!"

The summit, which has been in the works since Trump accepted Kim's invitation to meet in March, will be the first ever meeting between a sitting USA president and North Korean leader.

Their comments came after talks between Mr Kim and South Korea's President Moon Jae-in. Kim has already visited China twice to meet its president Xi Jinping while Trump has sent Mike Pompeo, the current USA secretary of state to meet him as many times as well.

Trump welcomed the North Korean announcement.
