Hamilton sets pace at Spanish Grand Prix practice

Expanding further on his Friday running, Hamilton said: "It was a tricky one, it was pretty windy out there, so I think every driver out there was struggling - sometimes you've got a tail-wind, a cross-wind, a head-wind, and so you're constantly arriving at each corner and it's never the same".

Crowd-favorite Fernando Alonso was sixth fastest with McLaren in the morning but was 12th in the second session.

The majority of changes aren't so noticeable though, with tweaks to the wings, bargeboards and floor the most common.

Bottas himself did not complete a simulation on the soft tyre, focussing on the medium compound Pirelli's instead.

Australian Daniel Ricciardo was second-quickest for Red Bull ahead of his team-mate Max Verstappen, the two managing to deliver speed without any close contact as they worked to put their collision in Azerbaijan two weeks ago behind them.

He looked set to improve on his qualifying simulation flying lap after switching to supersofts, but was too aggressive on the throttle in the Turn 7 left-hander and took a bite of the gravel.

What was more encouraging for the Milton Keynes outfit was the long-run pace on the SuperSoft which was consistently several tenths faster per lap than Mercedes and also more durable, which could make choosing strategy very interesting indeed.

Bottas was a tenth of a second faster in the morning session than Hamilton's afternoon time at the 4.6-kilometer (2.8-mile) track outside Barcelona.

Ferrari had a quiet day but remain very much in the game with Vettel the aforementioned fourth.

Committee Chairman Richard Burr (N.C.) spoke for most of his colleagues when he said: "Gina, I have reviewed your record closely". When reporters mentioned that Haspel was sure to get questioned about her offer to withdraw , Manchin told them to stay tuned .

Kimi Raikkonen was the slowest of the drivers from the top three teams, surviving a run through the gravel at Turn 4 before bringing his vehicle into the pits with just under 40 minutes remaining with an unidentified problem.

He was told to stop the vehicle but had enough momentum to reach Turn 13 and roll downhill into the pit lane and return to the garage, but did not rejoin the session.

The proposed layout of the track in Miami's port area published recently is dominated by two long straights, and Hamilton suggests drivers should be in involved in track design.

Romain Grosjean was seventh ahead of his Haas teammate Kevin Magnussen, Stoffel Vandoorne of McLaren and Sergio Perez of Force India.

"That's why we changed it because it was quite hard for us to see cars behind", he said. Hamilton was fastest in the second free practice session and rounded off a satisfactory Friday for the Silver Arrows.

In fact, he would find himself behind both Sauber's on a strong day for the Swiss team.

Robert Kubica completed his first practice session of the year with Williams and drove Sergey Sirotkin's vehicle to the 19th fastest time. Kubica ended 19th, while Lance Stroll finished in last place, 1.2 seconds behind the Polish driver.

Kubica was replacing Russian rookie Sergey Sirotkin, who returns for second practice and the race but has a three-place grid penalty.
