"I realize that there are strong disagreements on the effectiveness of the CIA's detention and interrogation program", Haspel wrote in answers to more than 100 questions submitted by committee members and released at her hearing. When reporters mentioned that Haspel was sure to get questioned about her offer to withdraw, Manchin told them to stay tuned. Haspel repeatedly said she believes in a strict moral standard.

But Haspel, now Central Intelligence Agency deputy director and acting director, refused to condemn the 2002-2005 program, during which scores of Al-Qaeda suspects were captured, whisked to "black sites" at secret locations around the world, and subjected to brutal interrogations that for some included repeated waterboarding. Committee Chairman Richard Burr (N.C.) spoke for most of his colleagues when he said: "Gina, I have reviewed your record closely".

Haspel vowed that such a program would not be restarted should she be confirmed, noting that other agencies are better equipped for field interrogations. McCain said Haspel had a chance to "explain her involvement in the so-called enhanced interrogation program during the Bush administration, and account for the mistakes the country made in torturing detainees held" after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

McCain, who is home at his ranch in Arizona as he battles brain cancer, made the statement after Haspel testified in her confirmation on Capitol Hill Wednesday morning.

Her nomination almost unraveled last week because of that record when White House aides examined for the first time C.I.A. message logs that made clear just how accepting she had been of since disavowed interrogation techniques.

In reality, Democrats and even some Republicans have opposed or remained skeptical of Haspel because of the great deal of secrecy surrounding her career. Correspondents say she was known for her harsh views.

Haspel, the Trump nominee, played a role in the Bush administration's torture and detention program after September 11.

Trump, who has spoken approvingly of waterboarding and other torture tactics, has loudly supported Haspel.

Celebrities at the 2018 Kentucky Derby
Quip, who qualified for the Kentucky Derby but whose trainer believed he needed more time, was also scheduled to run in two weeks. Despite the unpredictable conditions, history predicted the result - it was the sixth consecutive Derby that a favorite has won.

Bayh, a Democrat from IN, and Chambliss, a Republican from Georgia, served on the Senate intelligence committee during Haspel's tenure at the CIA. She joined the agency in 1985 and said she quickly discovered that she had a "knack for the nuts and bolts" of the profession.

GOP Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina is telling Gina Haspel that she is "without a doubt, the most qualified person the president could choose to lead the CIA and the most prepared nominee in the 70-year history of the agency".

So, it's a shame Ms. Haspel has to be subjected to this nonsense, but I would bet the mortgage that she would be confirmed.

Haspel's promise to fight any attempt to resurrect the program could put her at odds with Trump, who spoke during the campaign about toughening the USA approach to fighting extremists and vowed to authorize waterboarding and a "hell of a lot worse".

"I welcome the opportunity to introduce myself to the American people for the first time", she said in a flat accent that belied her Kentucky roots. Joe Manchin, a Democrat from Trump-friendly West Virginia, faces a tough race for re-election this November, and appears poised to side with the president over his party on Haspel.

"It was the beginning of an adventure I had only dreamed of".

The RNC followed up on the gender component of Haspel's nomination on Wednesday, describing in an email to reporters that exchanges between Democratic senators and the nominee were tantamount to "mansplaining". They were voted on by the American people when they voted for a Republican president.
