Federal Health Officials: 1st Death Reported In Romaine Lettuce E. Coli Outbreak

One person has died in the E. coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce.

In the United States, romaine harvesting usually shifts north to California at this time of year, but federal officials have said they can't guarantee there are no more products now coming out of the Yuma growing region. The CDC updated its numbers on the outbreak Wednesday, revealing that 121 people had gotten sick in 25 states.

The source of the whole head romaine was traced back from the prison to Harrison Farms Inc.in Yuma, AZ.

Photo The outbreak involves both whole-head and chopped, bagged romaine lettuce.

"Don't eat or buy ANY romaine lettuce unless you can confirm it is not from the Yuma, Arizona growing region". Symptoms include bloody and watery diarrhea, and serious and painful abdominal cramps. The latest nationwide statistics show 23 more people have gotten sick and 3 more states have reported illness: Kentucky, Massachusetts and Utah.

Most people recover in five to seven days.

The infections have hospitalized 52 people, including 14 who've received a type of kidney failure. The newest update includes illnesses that began as recently as April 21. But investigators have not specified when and where that lettuce became contaminated with the risky bacteria, and the farm has not been linked to other cases. The CDC noted there may be a lag time of two to three weeks from the time a person becomes ill with E. coli to when that illness is reported to federal officials.

Efforts to determine the source of the romaine that was chopped are slow going because of shipping and receiving records through the supply chain that closely resemble a tangled ball of yarn that they do a paper trail. That outbreak, which caused 24 illnesses across 15 states, was officially declared over in January. "If you can not confirm the source of the romaine lettuce, do not buy it or eat it". It is safe to consume romaine lettuce that originates from other regions, however.
